The Strongest Pre-Workouts We Track
When people ask for a strong pre-workout they mean one they can feel, and the thing you feel is the caffeine. Here is every stimulant formula we track ranked by it, the short list at the top, and what the top of the shelf costs you.
Strong means caffeine
A pre-workout carries four or five active ingredients, but only caffeine kicks in within half an hour and makes a session feel different. The pump ingredients work over the session, and beta-alanine and creatine build up over weeks. The tingle from beta-alanine often gets read as strength, but it is a harmless nerve sensation and says nothing about the dose of anything else; the tingling guide explains it. Caffeine is also the one ingredient we record in milligrams, so it is the one we can rank on honestly.
8 of the 13 products we track carry caffeine, from 180mg a serving up to 390mg, and the other 5 are caffeine-free. Measured by caffeine per serving, the strongest pre-workout we track is RYSE Loaded Pre-Workout, at 390mg, about 4.1 cups of drip coffee in one shaker.
Every stimulant product we track, strongest first
Caffeine per serving as the label states it, the quiz tier that amount falls in, and whether the formula carries beta-alanine. The coffee guide has the same list in cups.

|---|---|---|---|
| RYSE Loaded Pre-Workout | 390mg | Very High | Yes |
| Gorilla Mode Pre-Workout | 350mg | Very High | No |

The strongest serving we track is 2.2 times the weakest. 4 of the 8 reach the quiz's top tier, "Very High (300mg+)": RYSE Loaded Pre-Workout, Gorilla Mode Pre-Workout, Legion Pulse Pre-Workout and Ekkovision Formula X Pre-Workout.

Strong without the tingle
3 of the 4 top-tier formulas carry beta-alanine. The one that does not is Gorilla Mode Pre-Workout. Go further down the shelf and it does not get wider: Gorilla Mode Pre-Workout is the only product we track with caffeine and no beta-alanine at any strength.
So if you want a big dose of caffeine and hate the tingle, the shelf is very short. The other route is a caffeine-free formula from the beta-alanine-free list with your own coffee on top, which the coffee guide works through in cups.
What the top of the shelf costs you
- Most of your day's caffeine. One serving of RYSE Loaded Pre-Workout leaves 10mg of the 400mg daily figure for a healthy adult, which is less than a single cup of coffee for the rest of the day. Taking it every day has the same arithmetic for every product.
- More caffeine than helps, for a lighter body. The performance studies used roughly 3 to 6mg of caffeine per kilogram of bodyweight, and more than that has not been shown to add anything but side effects. RYSE Loaded Pre-Workout works out to 5.2mg per kilogram for a 75kg adult, near the top of that range, and past 6mg per kilogram for anyone under 65kg. Pre-workout for running works out which bodyweights each serving suits.
- Your sleep. Caffeine's half-life is about five hours, so a big dose in the late afternoon is still in you at bedtime. The evening guide has the table.
- Jitters, a racing heart and a crash. These scale with the dose, and the side-effects guide maps each one to its ingredient.
Half a serving of it is 195mg, which the quiz files under "Moderate (100-200mg)". That is why half a scoop of the strongest formula is the standard advice for a first try, and why how much to take argues for buying a weaker product rather than halving a strong one every day.
When the strongest stops feeling strong
If a formula that used to hit hard now does nothing, the formula did not change. Daily caffeine builds tolerance, and the answer is a break, not a stronger tub. Moving up the table buys a few weeks and then leaves you at the top of it with nowhere to go. The daily-use guide covers what a break resets, and the stim-free shortlist is what to take during one.
What this list cannot tell you
- The rest of the kick. 1 of the 8 stimulant products lists a milder relative of caffeine among its headline ingredients: Ghost Legend Pre-Workout (Theobromine). That relative is not counted in the caffeine column, and it adds far less than the caffeine does. None of the 13 lists a stimulant like yohimbine or synephrine, which raise blood pressure in their own right, among its headline ingredients. Does pre-workout raise blood pressure covers the caffeine side of that.
- We track 5 headline ingredients per product. A stimulant further down a panel is invisible to this table.
- A serving is not always one scoop. Some labels count a serving as two scoops, so read the caffeine per serving and the scoops per serving together.
- How strong it feels depends on you. Bodyweight, how much caffeine you already drink and whether you have eaten all change how a dose lands, and on an empty stomach the same scoop hits sooner and harder.
Getting the strongest out of the quiz
Answer “Very High (300mg+)” to the caffeine question. Its first pick for that answer is Gorilla Mode Pre-Workout at 350mg, not RYSE Loaded Pre-Workout at 390mg. The quiz scores the tier, not the milligrams, so inside the top tier your other answers decide the order. Answer "Yes" to the tingle question as well and every product with beta-alanine is removed before anything is scored. What is left is Gorilla Mode Pre-Workout first, then 2 caffeine-free products, Gorilla Mode Nitric Stim-Free Pre-Workout and Ghost Pump Non-Stim Pre-Workout, because no other stimulant product survives the filter. The buyer's guide explains why the caffeine answer comes first.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the strongest pre-workout?
- Measured by caffeine per serving, the strongest pre-workout we track is RYSE Loaded Pre-Workout, at 390mg, about 4.1 cups of drip coffee in one shaker. That is a ranking by caffeine, which is what a label means by strong: it is the only ingredient in the scoop you feel within half an hour. 4 of the 8 reach the quiz's top tier, "Very High (300mg+)": RYSE Loaded Pre-Workout, Gorilla Mode Pre-Workout, Legion Pulse Pre-Workout and Ekkovision Formula X Pre-Workout.
- What counts as a high-stim pre-workout?
- There is no official line. Our quiz calls 200mg to 300mg a serving high and 300mg or more very high. 8 of the 13 products we track carry caffeine, from 180mg a serving up to 390mg, and the other 5 are caffeine-free.
- Is there a strong pre-workout without beta-alanine?
- 3 of the 4 top-tier formulas carry beta-alanine. The one that does not is Gorilla Mode Pre-Workout. Go further down the shelf and it does not get wider: Gorilla Mode Pre-Workout is the only product we track with caffeine and no beta-alanine at any strength.
- Is a stronger pre-workout better?
- Only up to a point. The performance research on caffeine used roughly 3 to 6mg per kilogram of bodyweight, and doses above that have not been shown to add performance, only side effects. RYSE Loaded Pre-Workout works out to 5.2mg per kilogram for a 75kg adult, near the top of that range, and past 6mg per kilogram for anyone under 65kg.
- How much caffeine is too much in a pre-workout?
- One serving of RYSE Loaded Pre-Workout leaves 10mg of the 400mg daily figure for a healthy adult, which is less than a single cup of coffee for the rest of the day. That figure is for the whole day, not per drink, and it is lower in pregnancy and for anyone sensitive to caffeine or on medication that interacts with it.
