The Best Stim-Free Pre-Workout

A stim-free pre-workout keeps the pump and endurance ingredients and drops the caffeine. Here is who that actually suits, what you trade away, and every caffeine-free option we track.

Who should train caffeine-free

There are four common reasons, and they are all practical rather than ideological:

  • You train late. Caffeine's half-life is roughly five hours, so a 6pm scoop is still working on you at midnight. This is the single most common reason people go stim-free.
  • You already drink coffee. If you have had two or three cups before you get to the gym, a 350mg pre-workout on top is stacking, not supplementing.
  • You are taking a tolerance break. Caffeine tolerance builds with regular use, and cycling off for a few weeks is a common way to get the effect back. A stim-free product lets you keep a pre-workout routine while you do it.
  • Stimulants do not agree with you. Jitters, a racing heart, anxiety or a hard crash afterwards are all reasons to skip them, and none of them require a diagnosis to take seriously.

What you keep, and what you give up

What you keep is most of the formula. The "pump" side of a pre-workout runs on citrulline and related nitric-oxide ingredients, which widen blood vessels and increase blood flow to working muscle. None of that depends on caffeine. The same is true of the hydration and endurance ingredients — glycerol, betaine, electrolytes.

What you give up is caffeine, and it is worth being honest about that: caffeine is one of the most reliably evidenced performance supplements available, mainly by increasing alertness and reducing how hard a given effort feels. No stim-free formula replaces it. If you want to feel switched on, a caffeine-free product will feel like less. If what you want is blood flow and a routine you can use at 9pm, you are not really losing anything.

How to choose between them

With caffeine off the table, three things separate this shortlist:

  • Creatine1 of the 5: Gorilla Mode Nitric Stim-Free Pre-Workout. Worth the extra few dollars if you would otherwise be taking creatine as a separate scoop.
  • Beta-alanine3 of the 5 leave it out: Gorilla Mode Nitric Stim-Free Pre-Workout, Ghost Pump Non-Stim Pre-Workout, RAW Pump Non-Stim Pre-Workout. Start here if the prickling is part of why you are on this page.
  • Diet3 of the 5 are vegan: Legion Pulse Caffeine-Free Pre-Workout, Transparent Labs Stim-Free Pre-Workout, Ghost Pump Non-Stim Pre-Workout.

Pick the caffeine question at the top of our quiz and every stimulant product is filtered out before anything is scored — the same hard filter, not a ranking nudge — then the rest of your answers decide the order.

Stim-free is not the same as tingle-free

These get confused constantly. Caffeine is the stimulant; beta-alanine is the ingredient that makes your face and hands prickle, and it turns up in caffeine-free formulas just as often as in stimulant ones. If the tingling is the thing you are trying to avoid, read the best pre-workouts without beta-alanine instead — and if you want to avoid both, the overlap is Gorilla Mode Nitric Stim-Free Pre-Workout, Ghost Pump Non-Stim Pre-Workout, RAW Pump Non-Stim Pre-Workout.

Frequently asked questions

What does "stim-free" mean on a pre-workout label?
It means the formula contains no caffeine or other central-nervous-system stimulants. Everything else a pre-workout usually does — the nitric-oxide "pump" ingredients, the endurance and hydration ingredients, the focus ingredients that are not stimulants — can still be there. "Non-stim", "caffeine-free" and "pump" products are all describing the same idea.
Do stim-free pre-workouts actually do anything?
They do a narrower job. The blood-flow ingredients most of them are built on — citrulline and its relatives — do not need caffeine to work, so the pump and the training-volume side of a pre-workout survives. What you give up is caffeine itself, which is one of the best-evidenced performance supplements there is, mostly through alertness and a lower sense of effort. If you want that effect, a stim-free product is not a substitute for it.
Will a stim-free pre-workout still make me tingle?
Only if it contains beta-alanine, which is a separate ingredient from caffeine and is what causes the prickling. Of the 5 caffeine-free products we track, 3 are also beta-alanine-free: Gorilla Mode Nitric Stim-Free Pre-Workout, Ghost Pump Non-Stim Pre-Workout, RAW Pump Non-Stim Pre-Workout. Stim-free does not automatically mean tingle-free.
Can I take a stim-free pre-workout before an evening workout?
That is one of the main reasons people use them. Caffeine has a half-life of roughly five hours in most people, so a late-afternoon or evening dose can still be measurably in your system at bedtime. A caffeine-free formula avoids that problem entirely.
Which pre-workouts have no caffeine?
In the Pick My Pre catalog: Gorilla Mode Nitric Stim-Free Pre-Workout, Legion Pulse Caffeine-Free Pre-Workout, Transparent Labs Stim-Free Pre-Workout, Ghost Pump Non-Stim Pre-Workout, RAW Pump Non-Stim Pre-Workout.
