Does Pre-Workout Expire? Dates, Clumps and When to Bin It
The date on a pre-workout tub is not the day it turns into something else. It is the manufacturer's promise that the powder still matches its label up to then, and most of what is on that label is unusually stable as a dry powder. What actually ends a tub is water — humid air let in every time the lid comes off, a damp scoop, a spell in the fridge. Water is also what turns a tub into a brick, and the brick has a consequence nobody warns you about. It is not that the powder has gone off. It is that your scoop just got bigger.
What the date on the tub actually promises
No US rule requires a dietary supplement to carry an expiry date at all. When a manufacturer prints one anyway, FDA expects that date to be backed by data showing the product still meets its label up to that point. So the date is a claim about potency and quality under the conditions the label asks for — sealed, or with the lid back on, somewhere cool and dry. It is not a line on the far side of which the tub becomes unsafe, and it cannot account for a tub that has spent a summer in a gym bag.
That cuts both ways. A tub a month past its date that has been kept dry is not meaningfully different from the same tub a month earlier. A tub well inside its date that has had water in it is not really covered by the date at all, because the date assumed the one thing that did not happen.
Dry, the actives are the stable part
The ingredients a pre-workout is sold on hold up well as dry powder. Caffeine is a notably stable molecule — most of it survives the roasting of a coffee bean. Creatine monohydrate is about as stable as creatine gets in powder form, which is a large part of why it is the form everyone sells. The amino acids that make up much of a scoop by weight, citrulline and beta-alanine among them, are not known for breaking down in a sealed, dry tub either.
What tends to change first in an old tub is the part nobody lists as an active: the flavour fades, the colour shifts, the powder stops dissolving cleanly. None of that is dangerous on its own. A change that shows up suddenly rather than slowly is still worth taking as a sign that something has got in.
Dry powder is a poor place for anything to grow, which is exactly why water is the variable that changes the answer. Almost every reason on this page to throw a tub out starts with water getting into it.
Why your tub turned into a brick
A clump is water. Some ingredients pull moisture straight out of the air — the word is hygroscopic — and every time the lid comes off in a humid room they take a little more. The real problem with a clumped tub is the scoop
A scoop measures volume. The dose on the label is set by weight — the Supplement Facts panel gives the serving size in grams. Loose powder has air in it; caked powder, broken up and pressed into a scoop, has less, so the same scoop holds more of it. That is the part of a clumped tub that actually matters, and it has nothing to do with spoilage.

- Break it up in the sealed tub first. Put the lid on tight and shake or roll it, then crush what is left against the side with the scoop. The aim is powder, not gravel.
- Level the scoop; do not pack it. Scrape across the top instead of pressing the scoop down into the tub.
- If it has set solid, weigh it. A kitchen scale and the gram figure next to the serving size on the label get you the real dose however dense the powder has become — and they make half a serving exactly half.
When to throw it out
Clumping on its own is not one of the reasons. A clump that crumbles back into dry powder between your fingers is moisture from the air and nothing more. These are:
- Anything that looks like mould. Fuzzy, spotted, or coloured patches that are not the colour of the powder.
- A smell that is not the flavour. Sour, musty, fermented, or simply wrong.
- Wet, sticky or darkened patches, as opposed to dry lumps.
- A tub that has had actual water in it — a wet scoop left inside, a lid left off in the rain — and has set hard around it since.
- A date well past on a tub that was not kept dry. The date was written for a tub stored the way the label asks. Past the date and stored badly, nothing is vouching for it any more.
A tub of pre-workout costs less than being wrong about one. If you are unsure, replace it.
Where to keep it
- Lid on tight, every time. Humid air is the slow leak, and every opening lets a little in.
- Leave the desiccant sachet in. That little packet is there to soak up exactly the moisture this page is about.
- Keep the scoop dry. A scoop rinsed and dropped back in damp is the quickest way to put a clump in the middle of a tub.
- A cupboard, not the fridge. A cold tub opened in a warm kitchen collects condensation on the powder, so the fridge adds the very water it looks like it is keeping out.
- Not the bathroom, and not the car. Steam and heat are the two conditions the date on the label did not assume.
The part that really expires: the mixed shaker
Once a scoop is in water the clock is different, and one ingredient in particular notices. Dissolved creatine slowly converts into creatinine, which does nothing for you, and the conversion runs faster the warmer and more acidic the drink is — and flavoured drinks are usually acidic. Over the half-hour between mixing and finishing, the loss is not worth thinking about. Mixed the night before and left in a warm car, it starts to be.
