A pre-workout is not a fat burner, and the label shows it

What caffeine actually does to the number

Two things it does not account for: habitual caffeine use, which blunts most of what caffeine does, and the fact that a pre-workout dose arrives in one go before exercise rather than spread across a day at rest.

The biggest number in that table — the strongest pre-workout we track, measured at the most generous end of the research — is smaller than a medium banana. Taking the strongest product we track every single day, the arithmetic says 36 servings to account for one pound — about 5 weeks — and the weakest needs 78, about 11 weeks. And that is before the two deductions above: tolerance, and the fact that these are numbers from people sitting still rather than people training. Nobody loses fat this way. The reason to know the figure is so you stop counting on it.

The pump is the most visible and it is worth zero here. The caffeine is the only ingredient with a number attached, and its signature — feeling a bit more awake — is the one you would struggle to describe. Anyone reading “I can really feel this one working” as evidence about fat is reading the loudest ingredient rather than the relevant one, which is the same mistake the tingling guide takes apart for a different reason.

What a scoop is actually worth in a cut

The honest case for taking a pre-workout while dieting has nothing to do with the table above. Training in a deficit is harder than training fed: you are more tired, less motivated, and the session you skip costs you far more than the 98 kilocalories even the strongest scoop here was worth. Caffeine lowers how hard a given effort feels, which is the effect it has the best evidence for, and it is worth more in a deficit than at any other time.

So the mechanism is adherence and work done, not thermogenesis. That reframing changes what you should buy: not the biggest caffeine number on the shelf, but the dose you can take before every session for months without it stopping working.
