The Best Low-Caffeine Pre-Workout

You want the caffeine, just less of it: enough to feel awake for the session and not enough to shake or lose sleep over. The honest answer starts with a gap on the shelf, and then covers the two ways to get a low dose anyway.

The shelf skips the low dose

None of the 13 products we track lands in the quiz's "Low (1-100mg)" tier. Of the 13 products we track, 5 are caffeine-free, and the least caffeine in any of the other 8 is 180mg a serving, in Transparent Labs BULK Pre-Workout. It is also the only product in the next tier up, "Moderate (100-200mg)".

So the shelf is caffeine-free or it is a solid dose, with very little in between. The buyer's guide counts every tier. Our list is a fixed catalog, so a low-caffeine formula we do not track may well exist, and if you find one, the caffeine per serving on its label is the number to check. What follows is what you can do with the products we do track.

Route one: half a serving

Half is the one fraction of a scoop you can measure without a scale, so the useful question is which formulas land in the Low tier at half. Here is every stimulant product we track, lowest first, with half a serving and the share of a serving that comes to 100mg.

Half a serving brings 2 of the 8 stimulant products into the Low tier: Transparent Labs BULK Pre-Workout (90mg) and Bucked Up Pre-Workout (100mg). For the other 6, half a serving is 125mg to 195mg, and getting to 100mg takes as little as 26% of a serving, a fraction no scoop measures.

Half a scoop halves everything else in it too, not just the caffeine. How much to take works through what that costs you, and why taking half of a strong formula every day is worse than buying a weaker one.

Where half a serving is a low dose (2)

Both come to 100mg or less at half a serving. Prices and formulas change often, so check the label on the product page before buying.

  • 180mg caffeine90mg at halfVegan

    Moderate-stim, artificial-sweetener-free formula built for muscle-building blocks.

Key ingredients: Citrulline Malate, Beta-Alanine, Betaine Anhydrous, Caffeine Anhydrous, L-Theanine

  • 200mg caffeine100mg at half

Balanced high-stim formula and one of the most popular gym-culture brands.

Key ingredients: Citrulline Malate, Beta-Alanine, AlphaSize Alpha-GPC, Caffeine Anhydrous, Deer Antler Velvet Extract

Route two: caffeine-free, plus a coffee

A cup of drip coffee is about 95mg, which the quiz files under "Low (1-100mg)". Take it alongside any of the 5 caffeine-free formulas we track and you have a low-caffeine pre-workout with a full serving of everything else in the scoop. 3 of the 5 also leave out beta-alanine, if you want no tingle either: Gorilla Mode Nitric Stim-Free Pre-Workout, Ghost Pump Non-Stim Pre-Workout and RAW Pump Non-Stim Pre-Workout.

This is the only route where you pick the caffeine dose instead of the label, and the rest of the scoop stays at full strength rather than being halved with it. The catch is that the dose is only as exact as your cup. The stim-free shortlist has all of them, and the coffee guide covers what coffee does and does not replace. Count the coffee you already drink that day too.

Who a low dose suits

  • Anyone taking it daily. Tolerance and sleep debt both scale with the daily dose, and the daily-use guide has the arithmetic.
  • Afternoon and evening training. Caffeine's half-life is about five hours, so a smaller dose is a smaller amount left at bedtime. The evening guide has the table.
  • Anyone who gets jittery, anxious or a racing heart. Those scale with the dose, and the side-effects guide maps them to caffeine.
  • Training fasted. The same dose hits sooner and harder on an empty stomach, so a low dose there can feel like a moderate one.

What this page cannot tell you

  • A serving is not always one scoop. Some labels count a serving as two scoops, and then half a scoop is a quarter of a serving. Read the caffeine per serving and the scoops per serving together.
  • How low feels depends on you. Bodyweight and how much caffeine you already drink both change it. For someone who drinks three coffees a day, 100mg may feel like nothing.
  • Cost per dose. We record the price of a tub but not how many servings it holds, so we cannot tell you what half a serving costs.

Asking the quiz for low caffeine

Answer "Low (1-100mg)" and the quiz returns 2 caffeine-free formulas, Gorilla Mode Nitric Stim-Free Pre-Workout and Legion Pulse Caffeine-Free Pre-Workout, and Transparent Labs BULK Pre-Workout at 180mg. With nothing in the Low tier, the tiers either side of it are equally close, so the quiz treats a caffeine-free formula and a moderate one as the same distance from your answer and lets your other answers break the tie. If you would rather have no caffeine at all, answer “No Caffeine (Non stimulant)”, which removes every stimulant product. The quiz scores full servings, so it will never suggest halving one; that step is yours.
